Custom Floor Graphics for a New Office in Downtown Vancouver

We dove into 2021 with a massive order involving floor graphics for one of the largest tech companies in the world. The brand, which is moving into a new office in downtown Vancouver, will be leasing an entire building. Since the building had to undergo renovation, our client wanted to upgrade their hallways by adding a dimension to the existing concrete floors through custom printed patterns.

The floor space encompassed an area of almost 9000 square feet that spanned over nine floors. To ensure smooth sailing, our team conducted thorough pre-checks to predict possible challenges. These included various site visits, printing samples, and figuring out the assembly line for printing and paneling the enormous floor graphics.

We also had to work closely with 3M to ensure the media we use warranties a long life and withstand extreme foot traffic while being anti-slip. We produced samples on two different 3M vinyls with white and grey patterns. The client preferred grey over white and chose 3M IJ180 vinyl with 3M 3645 anti-slip laminate.

For the full prints, we decided to split the job per floor for efficiency. Each floor with its unique patterns will get printed for two days followed by another two days of installation (as we simultaneously print the next floor). Cumulatively, all nine floors took about three and half weeks to complete.

Despite the magnitude and challenges we faced, we are delighted with the results. All the stakeholders (client, designers, sales, prepress, production, and installers) did a spectacular job of planning, organizing, and executing the proposed solutions.

Behind the Scenes

One of the biggest challenges we faced was fitting the various panels onto the media while ensuring they flow seamlessly. While quite an unadorned problem on paper, it required an elaborate solution.

  • We first conducted multiple site checks to measure the site and compared it with the architectural drawings supplied.
  • Next, we re-scaled the supplied-artwork to match site measurements.
  • Then, we strategically paneled each pattern (manually) to make sure none of the panel breaks fall on the actual printed area.
  • Finally, we reversed engineer our custom panel breaks to re-create the full image and then compare it again with our site measurements to ensure accuracy.

We also faced challenges with lamination. Because the media was transparent, we had to ensure there were no dust particles under our prints or lamination. Our production team did a thorough 2-day cleaning of the entire shop floor, including waxing of the flooring to guarantee cleanliness before printing.

We even tweaked the pressure of our laminator to accommodate the media’s stretch factor. All in all, we printed about 18 rolls of media over 8-days – an effort that reflects in the final results.
