Carbon60 Office Wall Mural and Decals

Carbon60 Office Wall Mural and Decals

Carbon60 helps businesses to maximize the performance and security of their core application infrastructure on private and public clouds. Established in 1999 in Toronto as an infrastructure and security consulting company then evolved into a managed hosting service provider a few years later with a footprint in Toronto and Kelowna.

They recently joined forces with GT.net in Vancouver and as a result, required some environmental graphics to brand their office. The graphics consisted of wall murals and decals only. However, due to their location and obstacles on the wall, alignment and overlapping were one of the major challenges.

Our Work

  • Two wall murals at approximately 20ft x 11ft each
  • 10 wall decals covering a two walls at approximately 30ft x 11ft
  • One cutout logo
  • One stand alone decal of a cube
The biggest challenge throughout the job was to align the individual decals such that they cover two walls precisely, while overlapping each other perfectly. We are very proud of the results and the carefully planned process by our sales, design, and installation team.

To meet the rising demand, Flyover Canada has been continuing to expand and update its current infrastructure – providing more information and features of the beautiful country it so gorgeously displays. In fact, Flyover Canada has been such a sensation among tourists that they have announced a second location that would be going up in Toronto in 2022.

But until then, the focus remains on the expansion of its current location where Multigraphics was once again ecstatic to help bring the creative vision of Flyover Canada’s team to life. The most recent addition includes:

Totem Prints for University of British Columbia

Beautiful Totem Prints for the University of British Columbia

The Commons Block of the Totem Park Student Residence at UBC serves six residential houses, with food services and other student amenities. Recently, it went through a major revamp of its Commons Block area with an upgrade to its environmental graphics in the lounge. This upgrade includes 5 pillar graphics and a custom printed wall section.

Taking advantage of the dynamic column height and long view perspective, the interior and exhibition design by PUBLIC Architecture + Communication (publicdesign.ca) incorporates Musqueam history, culture, language, and teachings. Colors are derived from the Musqueam traditional color palette and woven into graphics, wall, floor and furnishings. Large-scale, direct print on wood illustrations by artists Diamond Point and Suzanne Guerin draw visitors and residents around the columns motivation an exploration of stories written by the Musqueam community.

While a simple feat on paper, the steps involved in completing this project were anything but. From designing to testing, and installing – each step required careful planning and precise measurement to put all the pieces together. Here’s how the whole job panned out:

  • The first stage was to verify and create a PDF proof showcasing the print design, sizes, and layout.
  • Next, we had to match the dimension of the final print with the physical pieces to ensure the dimensions provided are accurate.
  • Since we only had one chance to get the print right, we did some pre-testing (by printing on paper) to ensure the print aligns properly.
  • During the printing stage, each panel was matched to its adjacent panels to ensure the image overflow lined up properly.
  • Along with 20 printed wooden slabs, we also produced 21 acrylic prints that were backed with black-painted MDFs.
  • Once all the printing was done, we did a test to confirm that the acrylic prints fit within the wooden slabs (as the acrylic needed to add up to same thickness).

The last step was to install the graphics. Wooden slabs were put up first, followed by acrylic panels and dimensional elements. In the end, the whole job consisted of:

  • 22 precut and polished 1/8″ Acrylic
  • 22 painted 0.5″ MDF panels
  • Various 3D Letters and Numbers on 1/2″ Acrylic wrapped in Gold Vinyl
  • 15 prefabricated wood panels (each at 10′ length)

The Art of Wrapping Utility Boxes

The Art of Wrapping Utility Boxes

You probably haven’t given a second thought, but chances are you have come across these utility boxes once and went “Why do they do this?” or “How did they do this?”. Well, wonder no more. As a large format printing specialist, Multigraphics has wrapped many utility boxes around the city of Vancouver and today we will briefly explain the hows and whys behind it.

What are Utility Boxes?

Utility boxes are metallic structures installed on street corners and sidewalks, holding all the valuable equipment that keeps our city running smoothly. They help run infrastructure like traffic lights, cable and phone connections, streetlights, transit shelters, electric transformers, and much more. Their respective cities own most utility boxes, however, some are owned and operated by private organizations.

Why do we wrap Utility Boxes with vinyl graphics?

No matter who owns them, there are thousands of them throughout the city. It’s one of those essential infrastructures that you need in public spaces, but don’t want the public to see. So how do you justify erecting them everywhere while avoiding making them an eye sore? Simple. You cover them up. Either by wrapping them in graphics or painting over them.

Of course, there is an option of not doing either, however, without any graphics, utility boxes are just flat, metallic canvas for taggers  to add their graffiti markings.

Up till the late 2000s, this was a major issue faced by cities around the world. Luckily, around the same time, the vinyl wrap boom was taking place. With better printing technologies and materials, large format printing industry had the solution. Their solution could not only deter taggers from marking on utility boxes, but also allow the owners to virtually place any image on the boxes. This pool of untapped potential led to various benefits that wrapped utility boxes provided over the years since.

Benefits of Wrapping Utility Boxes

  • Provides a platform or an opportunity for local artist (e.g. city of vancouver art call) to showcase their talent in the form of public art.
  • Eliminates or prevent vandalism by disallowing graffiti markings on the boxes (as the graphics are covered with anti-graffiti laminate).
  • Helps beautify the city by creatively merging the metal infrastructures with their surrounding landscapes.
  • The graphics are long lasting (upward of 5+ years) and can easily be replaced, providing an economically feasible solution for the city.
  • Can be a form of major tourist attraction if done right. Having a creative image can lead to the up rise of Instagramers popularizing the art.
  • Fun Fact: Wrapped utility boxes are one of the most popular forms of Pokestops in the popular mobile game Pokemon Go.

How are Utility Box Wraps Produced?

Like most prints, producing utility box graphics go through the following stages:

  1. We visit the site to get precise measurements of the utility boxes and any irregularities that we might encounter during installation.
  2. We draw a rough mockup on paper to go with the order for production.
  3. At Prepress stage, each utility box is subdivided into individual panels in relation to how they will be printed and cut.
  4. This is forwarded to client for final approval before proceeding with the prints.
  5. The graphics are printed on highly durable 3M Conformable Vinyl and laminated with either Gloss or Anti-Graffiti Laminate.
  6. The last step involves the actual installation which will bring all the element of design and mockups together to bring the visual to life.
