Vancouver Mural Festival's Massive Parkade Ramp Wall Mural

One of our largest wall murals to date was installed at a parkade ramp wall in downtown Vancouver as part of the Vancouver Mural Festival. The stunning and alluring art was designed by Cas Nahui (IG: @casnahui) and commissioned by Westbank.

The graphics were printed on 3M premium vinyl with a luster laminate to alleviate the vibrant colors. Due to the sloping ramp with a lurking overhead at the end, our team had to take in the angle and varying heights into consideration during the pre-flight of the artwork.

Needless to say, our team did an excellent job predicting all the possible challenges we may face and split the length of the graphics into various sections. These sections were then lined up perfectly together during the 2-day install which resulted in the seamlessly panoramic piece that you see in the gallery and video below.

Custom Floor Graphics for a New Office in Downtown Vancouver

We dove into 2021 with a massive order involving floor graphics for one of the largest tech companies in the world. The brand, which is moving into a new office in downtown Vancouver, will be leasing an entire building. Since the building had to undergo renovation, our client wanted to upgrade their hallways by adding a dimension to the existing concrete floors through custom printed patterns.

The floor space encompassed an area of almost 9000 square feet that spanned over nine floors. To ensure smooth sailing, our team conducted thorough pre-checks to predict possible challenges. These included various site visits, printing samples, and figuring out the assembly line for printing and paneling the enormous floor graphics.

We also had to work closely with 3M to ensure the media we use warranties a long life and withstand extreme foot traffic while being anti-slip. We produced samples on two different 3M vinyls with white and grey patterns. The client preferred grey over white and chose 3M IJ180 vinyl with 3M 3645 anti-slip laminate.

For the full prints, we decided to split the job per floor for efficiency. Each floor with its unique patterns will get printed for two days followed by another two days of installation (as we simultaneously print the next floor). Cumulatively, all nine floors took about three and half weeks to complete.

Despite the magnitude and challenges we faced, we are delighted with the results. All the stakeholders (client, designers, sales, prepress, production, and installers) did a spectacular job of planning, organizing, and executing the proposed solutions.

Behind the Scenes

One of the biggest challenges we faced was fitting the various panels onto the media while ensuring they flow seamlessly. While quite an unadorned problem on paper, it required an elaborate solution.

  • We first conducted multiple site checks to measure the site and compared it with the architectural drawings supplied.
  • Next, we re-scaled the supplied-artwork to match site measurements.
  • Then, we strategically paneled each pattern (manually) to make sure none of the panel breaks fall on the actual printed area.
  • Finally, we reversed engineer our custom panel breaks to re-create the full image and then compare it again with our site measurements to ensure accuracy.

We also faced challenges with lamination. Because the media was transparent, we had to ensure there were no dust particles under our prints or lamination. Our production team did a thorough 2-day cleaning of the entire shop floor, including waxing of the flooring to guarantee cleanliness before printing.

We even tweaked the pressure of our laminator to accommodate the media’s stretch factor. All in all, we printed about 18 rolls of media over 8-days – an effort that reflects in the final results.

3M Solar Film Installation at The Oceanic Plaza in Downtown Vancouver

Outsmart the sun

Solar Film Installation at the Oceanic Plaza in Vancouver

Located at the center of Vancouver’s Business district, Oceanic Plaza attracts top tenants by offering a convenient location, outdoor space, and rich amenities, all streamlined for a productive and balanced environment. As part of their continuing effort to increase value for their clients, they reached out to Multigraphics for a solution to help reduce their building’s heat, glare, and energy consumption.

After extensive research, cost analysis, and thorough discussions with the client, we finalized 3M™ Amber 35 Low E Window Film as the best fit for this project. The film tackles all their pain-points and includes features such as:

  • Keeping occupant cool in the hotter months and warm in the colder through metalized heat gain reduction and heat insulation technology
  • Creating a comfortable environment by reducing glare and eye discomfort
  • Extending the life and vibrancy of furniture, fittings, and fabrics.
  • Reducing the risk of injury from flying glass.
  • Improving energy savings by reducing the workload of heating and cooling systems.

The whole project encompassed 18 floors, almost 1200 windows, and 130 rolls of media. The installation took place mostly at night and on weekends to minimize disruption to existing tenants. Considering how the building is covered in glass from top to bottom, the tenants will enjoy reduced heat and glare, while retaining great views.

Behind the Scenes

Prior to installation, each floor’s tenants had their furniture moved away from the windows to create sufficient work space. Some windows require prior film removal, while the rest only required cleaning. Once the glass was ready, our two teams of installers – each comprising of 2-3 members –  then wet applied the solar film onto the windows.

Science Behind Solar Films

Enhanced Comfort and Protection

The spectrally selective films reject up to 97% of the sun’s heat-producing infrared light, helping keep interiors cooler, reducing the load on cooling systems, and saving energy.

Unsurpassed Capabilities

What sets solar films apart is the precision with which light waves are controlled as they pass through or reflect off of hundreds of layers of film. This means when the sun is working its hardest, so is the solar film.

3M Solar Film Prestige Series

UV Protection

By blocking 99.9% of UV rays, the film helps protect furnishings from the harmful effects of the sun. And according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, window film is one of several recommended safeguards against UV damage.

No Corrosion or Signal Interference

Being non-metallic, Solar films aren’t susceptible to corrosion in coastal environments. they also don’t interfere with electronic device signals

Off-White Vancouver Pop-up Store Graphics

Pop-up Store Graphics at Off-White Vancouver

Multigraphics is once again a part of a new pop-up shop opening in Vancouver. This time it’s the luxury brand Off-White™ Vancouver that launched on the walkway between CF Pacific Centre and the third floor of Holt Renfrew. Opening just for a month (September 1 to September 30), the exclusive collection is presented in a re-designed space that aims to embrace “sophisticated, modernity”.

The store covers 2,000-square-foot of space that is filled with custom fabricated display cases, racks, osb millwork, LED acrylic Neon sign, custom lightbox with backlit print, floor vinyl (matte background with white glossy logo), and window decals. The entire project was a collaboration between many parties and we are very happy to see it come to life and fully installed.

If you get a chance, do go and check out the Pop-up store. If you missed the opportunity, then fret not, you can still see the beautiful layout in the pictures and video of our work below.

Behind the Scenes

The project required testing and color sampling to ensure the colors matched across different media as we wanted to ensure that regardless of the location, each sign must be identical and on brand.

INSTALLATION

The entire installation process was completed overnight which included installation of the entire floor with vinyl, setting up fabricated fixtures, cut vinyl on glass, backlit frames with graphics, and 3D Neon sign.

Herschel Pop-Up Stores at The Bay

Custom Retail Signage at The Bay

Herschel store is back once again with its summer pop-up stores located within The Hudson’s Bay across Canada. This time the 5 stores included were Vancouver, Montreal, Sherway, Queens, and Yorkdale. Each location had a constant theme with identical graphics.

The project started with reviewing the pop-up stores’ rendering and the required graphics. While majority of the graphics were standard retail signage, there was one exception – custom fabricated cubes. A first for Multigraphics, these cubes were produced from 4mm thick Palboards that were printed on a flat sheet, cut to custom shape (designed by our R&D team), and then assembled together to form a cube.

The final count for all the graphics were as follow.

  • 10x Freestanding Upright Signs, each supplied with a black metal base
  • 51x Custom Printed Boxes
  • 22x Poster Prints
  • 128x Double Sided Graphics
  • 216x Shelf Inserts
  • 54x Floor Decals

Behind the Scenes

The project required design testing and color matching to ensure the colors are consistent across different media for all graphics at each location. We made sure each sign was identical and on brand.

Google Cloud Relay Canada 2018

Custom ACP Signs for Google Relay Canada (2018)

8 Cities | 1000 Developers | 5 Time Zones | 1 Challenge | 1 Day

St. John's Quebec City Montreal Toronto Vancouver Calgary Ottawa Winnipeg

The Google Cloud Relay is one of Google’s most ambitious collaborative events where a coding challenge takes place simultaneously in 8 different cities across Canada. In the challenge, more than 1,000 of the country’s top developers team up with peers in their province to build a complete working solution using the Google Cloud Platform.

The event’s graphical design was created and overseen by Unit 11 who approached Multigraphics to assist with all the printing and fabrication. The idea was to create a backdrop stage at each venue that reflects the one-day, one-challenge vibe. A simple solution in theory, but challenging in practice. The various heptagons needed to be bent, printed, wrapped, and aligned to form the patterned required. To make it more challenging, they also needed to be transported to eight different cities without getting damaged.

The bright minds at Unit 11, 3DS, and Multigraphics went through several ideas and prototypes before finalizing on bent aluminums with wrapped graphics. This solution provided a light, cheap, and durable product that was “a real hit with all cities”, according to Unit 11’s Penny.

After the initial prototype that was approved by the client, Multigraphics assembled, constructed, wrapped and packaged 120 Heptagons using:

  • 238 units of 3mm Alupanel (24″x 24″), trimmed to beveled edges
  • 119 units of 3mm Alupanel (74″x 3″), trimmed to beveled edges
  • 119 strips of printed graphics on 3M Vinyl (32″x30″), trimmed to unique shape
  • 125 strips of blank 3M vinyl (75″x1.5″), trimmed to size
